Ravi Speaks: “The Intellectual Block”

Depiction of the Intellectual-Block( a diagrammatic expression)

Ravi Speaks:

The following excerpt is from my book, “38 Years of Selling.” It is relevant to a specific group of allopathic physicians who, in some way, feel differently about other, non-allopathic medical systems. Here is a brief discussion of their mentality as I have observed it over the course of my four decades of pharmaceutical sales.

Let me today after a gap, again come back on to the pharma subject. When we talk of the different pharmaceutical products, we first talk of the pharma-industry. The pharmaceutical industry researches, develops, and manufactures thousands of medications for a variety of diseases and health conditions. There are three main types of pharmaceutical companies: mainline, research and development, and generic. This division is purely for the allopathic system made. However, in the same pattern, the Ayurveda products, too, which are considered being coming under the natural source section-also are categorized into the modern/ branded, pure herbal, and the classical sections.

The crucial question which we have been facing here in Ayurveda has been the apprehension which some highly qualified allopathic trendsetters (doctors) have been nurturing in their minds and that way not even writing such brands of Ayurveda which might even have international research backing. We will find quite a few qualified allopathic doctors-who write well researched Ayurveda brands very well since they get the required response too. But, the above mentioned few ones who do not write the Ayurveda brands at all, are the real hard ones or we may say the adamant ones. What do you call such a type of few doctors? Of course, no-support giving section, but they in a general term may even be said to be having the “Intellectual Block” in their minds. When we go slightly deep into this word, we may not get the deeper meaning of Intellectual-Block but yes these doctors think they had been qualified highly in the allopathic system and the Ayurveda system might be the one which did not fit into their category of Intellectual standing with a sense of looking at it as the inferior or inadequate system.

Depiction Of Intellectual Block

Speaking- “Intellectual Blocks”: – Can occur because of inflexible or inadequate uses of problem-solving strategies. Lacking the intellectual skills to solve a problem can certainly be a block, as can lack the information necessary to solve the problem.

Academic Block As The Intellectual Block.

I have seen some of my colleagues, even the seniors one defining such type of doctors as having the Mental Block towards the Ayurveda products-which is a wrong way of expressing such type of doctors. Because “Mental blocks” can be caused by physical disabilities or simply a lack of focus. Mental blocks are also often used to describe a temporary inability to recall a name or other information. So, in no way we should use such expressions for the highly qualified doctors-who have their reservations for not writing the Ayurveda brands.

There is another very heavy reason for some of the qualified allopath not writing of late Ayurveda brands. That reason is the Apex Court Judgement of 1996 mainly coming as the clear-cut instruction for not writing the brands of which these doctors had not been qualified and thus did not know. Although here again a lot of critical legal commentary has already been made and even some of the later judgments to have come, which influence the earlier verdict. That way, some of the popular trendsetters have already started writing the Ayurveda brands. But the topic under discussion here is not for such types of doctors who have some reason for stopping the writing of such products-which they were regularly writing earlier.

We are discussing here the set of those doctors who, even before the Apex Court verdicts, had firm convictions about Ayurveda to be something coming purely under the Grade-B or C category and they’re expressing an inferior treatment to such a system. To such a set of adamant doctors, we say that they have been having a sort of Intellectual Block towards Ayurveda drugs and they openly say that they would not be writing such stuff at all.

Look at the irony of the things developing in the international arena. There have now been researched papers coming out from different developed countries other than India on Ayurveda products and even the research is done purely on the modern parameters-which were being used only earlier only for the allopathic products. Based on it there has been an enormous upsurge of Ayurveda product usage in the developed third world. Ayurveda has been picking up drastically that way in those countries, but here in our own country where we have over 2000 years old Ayurveda system, it is still being categorized as an inferior system as compared to the Allopathic system by some.

The number of such qualified allopathic-doctors in other countries would diminish whom we could categorize into having the “Intellectual Block” towards Ayurveda because of the faster acceptance of Ayurveda in those developed countries.

I remember an actual story which has happened to me in Ludhiana. I had one such highly qualified doctor-who was the HOD Medicine and even the member of the Gastro-enterology in India-he too had this Intellectual-Block and was not at all writing any of the Himalaya brands. In his OPD, much as some SRs would like to write products like Liv52 or such renowned brands-it was only because of his being there that those people also could not dare to write any such brands. One day he called me by keeping a message in OPD Medicine to meet him. I immediately met him in his office and was surprised to see his friendly approach, where he was expressing a desire to conduct a study on Liv52-which was quite surprising. He told me to meet the HOD Pharmacology of DMC-Ludhiana. When I met the concerned -I came to know that there was a letter written to the HOD Hepatology-PGI-Chandigarh by the doctors from Munich-Germany-where they had asked for more details of Liv52. Only after this, I could realize that even such a big doctor who did not give any importance to Ayurveda and Himalaya also got changed since there was this letter from Munich. The bigger change was noticed immediately after that when the prescriptions from his OPD started coming out for the same brand.

Now, what do you call this? Where had his “Intellectual Block” gone? Why did he write the brand with no further special efforts put? Had he some Emotional Block too-which seemed to have gone with the Munich letter? All these questions come to mind and the answer to all this is very obvious. Still, our convictions are not based on our firm-judgmental-Intelligence but sorry to say on foreign-evidence (the Munich-letter)-which has a very high weight age in our country.
