Top ten events of 2021 in India.
1. Cyclones that hit Indian coasts in 2021
Cyclone Tauktae: Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm Tauktae was a deadly tropical cyclone in the Arabian Sea that made landfall on the Gujarat coast on May 17.
Cyclone Yaas: Very Severe Cyclonic Storm Yaas had brought significant impacts to Odisha and West Bengal during late May.
Cyclone Gulab: Cyclone Gulab was the third tropical cyclone formed over the east-central Bay of Bengal on September 24.
Cyclone Jawad: Cyclonic Storm Jawad was a weak tropical storm that affected Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and West Bengal in the month of December.
2. Oxygen Crisis during 2nd wave of COVID pandemic
The devastating second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic caused India’s healthcare system to disintegrate. In the months of April and May, hospitals around the country ran out of oxygen for which the COVID patients died due to oxygen shortage. In view of this, many firms as well as the State Governments set up oxygen plants on a war footing to save precious lives in the fight against deadly COVID-19.
3. Civilians killed by Army in Nagaland
Army operations in Nagaland turned uglier as 15 civilians and one soldier were killed in a botched ambush and retaliatory violence in Nagaland’s Mon district on December 4.
4. CDS General Bipin Rawat in IAF chopper crash
December 8, 2021, could be tagged as the ‘Dark Day’ of India, with the loss of 13 great lives in an Indian Air Force (IAF) chopper crash. The entire country mourned the sudden death of Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat, his wife, and 11 other defense dignitaries.
5. Three controversial farm laws scrapped and farmers withdraw year-long protest
Agitating farmers started celebration across the country after Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a television address on November 19 apologized to the farmers and announced repealing of three controversial farm laws following a year-long protest in borders of Delhi.
6. Lakhimpur Kheri violence
On October 3, three cars rammed into protesting farmers in the Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh. Two of these cars belong to union minister Ajay Kumar Misra Teni. Eight persons including four farmers died in violence that erupted during the farmers’ protest.
7. Tata regains control of Air India after 70 years
Air India returned to Tata after 70 years after the Government of India approved the sale of the national carrier to Talace Private Limited, a Special-Purpose Vehicle of Tata Sons. The Tata Group will pay Rs 18,000 crore to acquire Air India from the government. Of this, 15% will go to the government and the rest will go toward clearing debt. The airline will be transferred to the Tata Group with a debt of Rs 15,300 crore. The government will fund the carrier until the handover.
8. Miss Universe title
Harnaaz Sandhu made India proud after she was crowned Miss Universe 2021 at the 70th Miss Universe 2021 held at Eilat, Israel, on December 12. The 21-year-old model from Chandigarh won the title beating Paraguay’s Nadia Ferreira and South Africa’s Lalela Mswane. India once again shone in the beauty pageant and brought back the title for the third time after a gap of 21 years.
9. India’s achievements at 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics
Olympics 2020:
On August 7, athlete Neeraj Chopra won India’s first-ever gold medal in Javelin thrown at Tokyo Olympics. On the same day, Indian wrestler Bajrang Punia won the Olympic bronze medal in Men’s freestyle 65 kg category taking the tally to 7 medals in the 2020 Olympics.
Businessman Raj Kundra, husband of actor and businesswoman Shilpa Shetty, was arrested by the Mumbai Police on July 19 and sent to the Arthur Road jail in connection with an adult film racket.
