Spinner Ravichandran Ashwin surpassed Harbhajan Singh to become the second-highest wicket-taker for India in international cricket during the first Test of the two-match series against West Indies in Dominica. Ashwin’s outstanding performance included figures of 5/60 in the first innings and 7/71 in the second innings, giving him a combined total of 12/131. With this achievement, Ashwin now has 709 wickets in 271 international matches, with an average of 25.67. His best bowling figures are 7/59, and he has recorded 27 four-wicket hauls, 34 five-wicket hauls, and 8 ten-wicket hauls in international cricket.

Ashwin’s impressive feat equals Anil Kumble’s record of eight ten-wicket hauls, making them the Indian bowlers with the most ten-wicket hauls. Harbhajan Singh, now in third place, has 707 wickets in 365 matches. Ashwin’s figures of 12/131 also rank as the third-best bowling performance by an Indian in an away Test.

In the ongoing Test match, India dominated the West Indies, with Rohit Sharma scoring a century and Yashasvi Jaiswal hitting a century on debut. India declared their innings at 421/5, leading by 271 runs. In response, the West Indies struggled against the spin duo of Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, being bowled out for just 130 runs. Ashwin took 7/71 and Jadeja claimed 2/38. Yashasvi Jaiswal was awarded the ‘Man of the Match’ for his century. India is currently leading the two-match series 1-0.
