Former Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett, who had a seven-year career in the NFL, passed away at the age of 35 in an apparent drowning incident at a beach in Destin, Florida. Mallett was swimming in the Gulf of Mexico with a group of people near a sandbar when they encountered difficulties returning to shore. Mallett was unresponsive when he was retrieved from the water and was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Mallett had an impressive college career, playing for the University of Michigan before transferring to Arkansas. He threw for 7,493 yards and 62 touchdowns during his two seasons with the Razorbacks. In 2010, he had his best season, earning second-team All-SEC honors and finishing seventh in the Heisman Trophy voting.
The New England Patriots selected Mallett in the third round of the 2011 NFL draft, where he served as a backup to quarterback Tom Brady. He later played for the Houston Texans and the Baltimore Ravens. Throughout his NFL career, Mallett appeared in 21 games, making eight starts and throwing for a total of 1,835 yards, nine touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.
After retiring from the NFL, Mallett pursued a career in coaching and was hired as the head football coach at White Hall High School in Arkansas in 2022. He expressed his passion for coaching and the joy of teaching young athletes.
