Russia Launches Largest Air Attack of War, Strikes Ukrainian Government Building for First Time

Russia damages Kyiv government building in the largest aerial attack since war began | PBS News

For the first time since the war began, Russia has struck a key Ukrainian government building in Kyiv, marking a dangerous escalation in its ongoing assault. The attack, carried out overnight Sunday, was the largest aerial strike of the entire conflict so far.

What Happened in Kyiv?

Russia launched more than 800 drones, along with ballistic and cruise missiles, targeting cities across Ukraine. While Ukraine’s air defenses successfully intercepted most of them, 54 drones and nine missiles managed to hit targets. Among the strikes was the Cabinet of Ministers Building in Kyiv—a first in this war.

Tragically, an infant was among at least two people killed in Kyiv, while dozens were injured. Across Ukraine, a total of four people lost their lives and 44 were wounded, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Why This Attack Matters

This strike surpasses Moscow’s previous largest assault back in July. It comes at a time when peace efforts are stalling, and frustrations are rising among Ukraine’s allies. The attack appears to send a message that Russia is escalating rather than seeking compromise.

Reactions from Leaders

President Zelensky condemned the attack as “vile” and accused Moscow of deliberately prolonging the war. He urged world leaders to act, saying: “The world can make the Kremlin’s criminals stop killing, all we need is political will.”

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump, speaking after the recent Alaska summit with Vladimir Putin that ended without results, expressed disapproval of the war but said he plans to speak with Putin “very soon.” His comments also hinted at new sanctions and meetings with European leaders in the coming days.

The Bigger Picture

Experts warn that Russia’s strike on a central government building in Kyiv is a strong signal of escalation. Keith Kellogg, a former US envoy on Ukraine and Russia, said the attack shows Moscow is not seeking a diplomatic end at this stage.

As the conflict drags on, Ukrainians are left under constant sirens and fear, with civilians paying the highest price.
