“Sam Altman Welcomes DeepSeek R1, Promises Faster OpenAI Innovations”

DeepSeek R1 Is Impressive But OpenAI Will Offer Better Models, Says CEO Sam Altman | Times Now

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, shared his thoughts on the launch of DeepSeek’s R1 model in a post on X (formerly Twitter) late Monday.

He called DeepSeek’s R1 an “impressive model,” especially given its affordability. Altman acknowledged DeepSeek as a competitor and described the competition as “invigorating.” He hinted that OpenAI would speed up its product releases in response.

Altman’s post read:

“DeepSeek’s R1 is an impressive model, particularly around what they’re able to deliver for the price. We will obviously deliver much better models, and also, it’s legit invigorating to have a new competitor! We will pull up some releases.”

DeepSeek, based in Hangzhou, China, disrupted global stock markets on Monday. Its AI chatbot’s success challenged the belief that better AI needs ever-increasing computing power.

However, Altman stood firm on OpenAI’s approach. He emphasized that advanced computing power remains crucial. “More compute is more important now than ever before to succeed at our mission,” he said.

Shares of SoftBank Group Corp., a key OpenAI partner, dropped 4.7% in Tokyo on Tuesday. SoftBank and OpenAI are jointly investing $100 billion to build infrastructure supporting AI development in the US.

Altman’s comments suggest OpenAI isn’t backing down and sees innovation as the key to staying ahead.
