Sunil Gavaskar has now laid a fresh set of objectives for Virat Kohli
Sunil Gavaskar, the legendary former Indian cricket captain, has never shied away from critiquing Virat Kohli’s performances. Throughout the recent Indian Premier League (IPL) season, Kohli faced scrutiny for his strike-rate and approach against spinners. Despite the criticisms, Kohli emerged as the highest run-getter, maintaining an impressive strike rate and an average of 61.75. His remarkable comeback silenced his detractors, proving his mettle once again.
With the IPL 2024 season wrapping up, Gavaskar has now set new challenges for Kohli. The cricket icon is urging Kohli to join an elite group of cricketers who have scored Test centuries at all Australian venues. Gavaskar’s specific wish is for Kohli to notch a century at the Gabba in Brisbane, a feat that would place him alongside Gavaskar himself and former England captain Alastair Cook.
New Milestone for Kohli
Gavaskar shared his thoughts during an event, expressing his desire for Kohli to achieve this milestone. “On an individual level, [my wish] maybe for Virat Kohli is that he becomes the third overseas player who’s scored a Test century in all the Australian venues. I think he doesn’t have one at the Gabba, so if he gets a century at The Gabba, that means he joins me and Alastair Cook,” Gavaskar stated, as reported by the Hindustan Times.
Currently, Kohli has six Test centuries in Australia, a record he shares with Sachin Tendulkar. This achievement makes them the joint highest by any Indian player and joint-third by an overseas batter. However, the Gabba remains the one venue in Australia where Kohli has yet to score a century.
In the last series played at the Gabba, Kohli missed out due to personal reasons. He returned to India after the first Test to be with his wife for the birth of their daughter. In his absence, Ajinkya Rahane led India to a historic 2-1 series victory, marking their second consecutive Test series win in Australia.
Kohli’s Path Ahead
As India prepares for a five-match Test series in Australia later this year, all eyes will be on Kohli. The upcoming T20 World Cup will also test his form and resilience. Gavaskar’s challenge adds an intriguing personal milestone for Kohli to aim for, potentially cementing his legacy further.
Kohli’s performance in the IPL 2024 has set a high benchmark. He averaged 61.75 and achieved a strike rate of 154.69, reinforcing his reputation as one of the top batsmen in the world. His ability to respond to criticism with stellar performances underscores his dedication and skill.
The cricketing world eagerly anticipates whether Kohli will rise to Gavaskar’s challenge. Achieving a century at the Gabba would not only fulfill Gavaskar’s wish but also add another illustrious chapter to Kohli’s storied career. As India tours Australia, the spotlight will be on Kohli to see if he can join the exclusive club of batsmen who have conquered every Australian Test venue.
