The BA.2.86 variant of COVID-19 has surged in the U.S., tripling in incidence over two weeks, now comprising approximately 9% of cases, according to the CDC’s Nowcast variant tracker. Although the exact prevalence is uncertain, health experts suggest it likely ranges from 5% to 15%. Dr. Perry Halkitis emphasizes the concerning pattern of growth rather than specific numbers. Hospitalizations and deaths from COVID-19 are rising, particularly in colder regions like the Northeast.
Pfizer-BioNTech’s 2023-24 vaccine is touted to offer protection against BA.2.86, reinforcing immunity as hospitalizations increase. While the variant stems from the BA.2 lineage of omicron, the CDC reassures that it doesn’t seem to drive increased infections or hospitalizations, with a low risk of severe illness compared to other variants.
CDC data highlights a 13% incidence of BA.2.86 in the Northeast, notably New Jersey and New York. Wastewater surveillance in New York since August has detected an uptick in cases, aligning with CDC estimates. However, officials don’t anticipate a return to the severity of the spring 2020 outbreak or the omicron variant.
