T20 World Cup: All Possible Scenarios In The Road To Semis
South Africa and defending champions England have secured spots in the T20 World Cup semifinals. In Group 1, India’s upcoming clash with Australia and Afghanistan’s match against Bangladesh will determine the qualifiers. Here’s what to watch for:
South Africa booked their semifinal spot with a thrilling three-wicket victory over hosts West Indies at Antigua on Monday using the DLS method.
In Group 2, England advanced after defeating USA on Sunday.
Group 1 Scenarios: India (4 points) are on track for qualification. A win against Australia (2 points) will guarantee them top spot in the group. Afghanistan (2 points) must defeat Bangladesh (0 points) to stay alive. If India loses to Australia and Afghanistan wins, all three teams will be tied at 4 points each. Afghanistan’s net run rate (NRR) is currently lower, so they would need a convincing win against Bangladesh. India faces elimination only if Australia and Afghanistan win their matches by more than 120 runs each. If Afghanistan loses to Bangladesh and India loses to Australia, the latter two teams will advance. If Australia loses and Afghanistan also loses, all three teams will end with 2 points. Australia’s superior NRR would likely see them through. Group 2 Scenarios: England (4 points) have secured their spot after defeating USA (0 points). South Africa (6 points) topped the group by defeating West Indies (2 points) on Monday.
Stay tuned as the race intensifies for the remaining spots in the T20 World Cup semifinals.
