Taylor Swift has shared the touching story behind her new song, “I Knew It, I Knew You,” which she co-wrote with longtime friend and music collaborator Jack Antonoff for the Toy Story 5 soundtrack.
In a recent interview with Good Morning America, Swift revealed that the idea for the song came shortly after she watched an early screening of Toy Story 5. Excited by what she had seen, she immediately called Antonoff to discuss creating music for the film.
Swift explained that both she and Antonoff grew up loving the Toy Story movies and have often talked about how the beloved franchise influenced their childhood. Their shared admiration for legendary composer Randy Newman, who created the iconic Toy Story theme song “You’ve Got a Friend in Me,” also played an important role in inspiring the project.
Recalling the moment, Swift said she was so excited after seeing the film that she quickly told Antonoff they needed to write a song for it. The enthusiasm and nostalgia they felt helped shape “I Knew It, I Knew You.”
The song was released on June 5, and Swift later shared on social media that it was written with deep affection for the characters who brought joy, valuable life lessons, and imagination to generations of children.
Swift also surprised fans at the Toy Story 5 premiere in Los Angeles on June 9 by performing the new song live. She additionally joined Randy Newman for a special duet of the classic “You’ve Got a Friend in Me.”
Speaking at the event, Swift said it meant a great deal to be part of the Toy Story universe, a film series that has had a lasting impact on her life.
The story highlights how childhood memories and lifelong friendships can inspire meaningful creative projects, bringing beloved characters and music to a new generation of fans.
