Brief:A passenger plane carrying 61 people crashed into a residential area in Vinhedo, Brazil, in Sao Paulo state on Friday, leaving a scene of devastation and no survivors, according to the airline. The extent of damage on the ground was not immediately clear.
VINHEDO, Brazil (AP) — A tragic incident occurred in the city of Vinhedo, located about 80 kilometers (50 miles) northwest of Sao Paulo, as a passenger plane crashed into a gated residential community, claiming the lives of all 61 people on board. The wreckage was left smoldering, with officials and the airline confirming no survivors.
While authorities have not confirmed any casualties on the ground, witnesses reported that there were no victims among the local residents where the crash occurred.
The airline, Voepass, stated that the aircraft, an ATR 72 twin-engine turboprop, was en route to Sao Paulo’s Guarulhos International Airport with 57 passengers and 4 crew members when it tragically went down in Vinhedo. A flight manifest was provided with passenger names, though their nationalities were not disclosed. An earlier statement mistakenly reported 58 passengers.
“The company regrets to inform that all 61 people on board flight 2283 died at the site,” Voepass said in a statement. “At this time, Voepass is prioritizing providing unrestricted assistance to the victims’ families and is actively collaborating with authorities to determine the causes of the accident.”
This incident marks the deadliest airline crash since January 2023, when 72 people perished in a Yeti Airlines crash in Nepal. That flight, also involving an ATR 72, stalled and crashed during its landing approach, with pilot error cited as the cause in the final report.
