At the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump delivered a 56-minute speech that was as combative as it was wide-ranging. He took aim at immigration, climate change policies, U.S. allies, and even the U.N. itself.
Key Highlights from Trump’s Speech
On Immigration:
Trump urged world leaders to follow his example in cracking down on migration, arguing that mass migration is changing the identity of nations. Critics, however, point out that many migrants are simply seeking safety and better opportunities.
On Climate Change:
Calling climate change a “con job,” Trump dismissed renewable energy policies and pushed for more reliance on fossil fuels. His remarks came shortly after meeting Britain’s King Charles, who is known for championing environmental causes. Scientists worldwide, meanwhile, continue to warn that climate change is very real and dangerous.
On Russia and Ukraine:
Trump criticized NATO allies for buying Russian oil and threatened to impose tough new tariffs on Moscow unless it agrees to end the war in Ukraine. He also urged European countries to adopt the same measures for them to work effectively. Later, in a meeting with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, Trump confirmed his support for more U.S. involvement and even said NATO should shoot down Russian planes if they violate airspace.
On Israel and Palestine:
Rejecting calls for Palestinian statehood during the ongoing Gaza conflict, Trump argued that such a move would only reward Hamas. He instead pushed for a ceasefire in exchange for the release of hostages.
On the UN and Personal Grievances:
Trump didn’t hold back his criticism of the United Nations itself. He joked about being stuck on a broken U.N. escalator with his wife Melania, calling it one of his “gifts” from the world body, along with a malfunctioning teleprompter.
The Reaction
World leaders offered polite applause but little enthusiasm. Trump’s speech underscored his trademark approach—direct, confrontational, and often controversial—reviving many themes from his earlier presidency.
