Trump’s 2024 Cabinet Picks: Key Appointments and What’s Still to Come

Who will be in Trump’s White House? From ex-rivals to golf mates

November 8, 2024 – Trump’s Cabinet: What We Know So Far

As Donald Trump gears up for another run at the White House, the question on many minds is: Who will fill his Cabinet if he wins? Trump has already made some moves, but the full picture is still coming together.

So far, only two key positions are locked in. Trump has announced that JD Vance, his vice-presidential pick, will be part of the leadership team. Another major announcement came on Thursday night: Susie Wiles, Trump’s campaign manager, will take on the role of Chief of Staff. She’ll make history as the first woman to hold that position in a Trump administration.

Now, while these early announcements give us a glimpse of what Trump’s Cabinet could look like, it’s still early days. The real question is who will fill the top Cabinet roles, such as Secretary of Defense, Secretary of Homeland Security, and others. These positions won’t be official until they’re confirmed by the Senate, and Trump will need to navigate confirmation hearings, which can sometimes get tricky.

One thing working in his favor: With a Republican majority in the Senate, it’s likely that Trump will have an easier time getting his appointees through. Still, each person nominated will have to go through a confirmation process, which means more public scrutiny.

We can also expect Trump to be careful about who he picks. His son, Donald Trump Jr., made it clear on Fox News that loyalty will be a big factor in the decision-making. He said his father will look for people who “don’t think that they know better than the duly elected president of the United States.”

As for some of the bold names circulating, like Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Elon Musk, it’s still unclear where they might fit in. Musk, for instance, has hinted at playing a role in improving government efficiency, but he’s unlikely to hold a Cabinet position. As for Kennedy, he has expressed interest in giving parents more say in vaccine decisions for their children, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll be offered a top role in the Cabinet either.

Trump also made waves recently when he promised to put former Senate candidate Herschel Walker in charge of a missile defense program. But whether this means an official government role is still up in the air.

Looking back at Trump’s first term, he struggled to get some Cabinet members confirmed, leading him to appoint several “acting” secretaries to fill gaps. These temporary roles, though, had their limits, and Trump may face similar challenges this time around.

It’s clear that Trump is starting to build his team, but much more will be revealed in the coming weeks. As he continues to make announcements, it’ll be interesting to see who else joins his Cabinet and how the process plays out with a potentially Republican-led Senate.
