Amblin/Universal/Warner Bros’ Twisters is on track for a strong $72 million opening weekend at the box office, significantly surpassing the initial $50 million expectations. The film earned a massive $31 million on its first day, including previews, marking a 76% increase from the adjusted opening of the original 1996 Twister. If these numbers hold, it will be the 25th-best domestic opening for July. Twisters‘ opening day is comparable to Dune: Part Two‘s first day ($32.2M) but trails behind Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire ($36.8M).

Despicable Me 4, another Universal release, is expected to take second place with $21.5 million in its third weekend, bringing its total to $257.1 million by Sunday. Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2 is projected to earn $11.1 million in its sixth frame, pushing its cumulative gross to $594.6 million. Neon’s Longlegs is estimated to gross $10.2 million in its second weekend, reaching a 10-day total of $43.1 million. Paramount’s A Quiet Place: Day One is set to make $5.5 million in its fourth weekend, for a running total of $127 million by Sunday. Twisters has shown strong performance in previews, adding to its promising opening.
