It has taken Kim Petras 15 years to get a debut album out.
Kim Petras, a German singer-songwriter, has finally released her debut album after 15 years in the music industry. Throughout her career, Petras has gained recognition as an intriguing pop artist. Her earlier singles paid homage to the fizzy bubblegum pop of the 2000s, while her Halloween-themed mixtapes showcased her edgy and spooky style. She made history by becoming the first trans artist to achieve a Number One hit with “Unholy,” a collaboration with Sam Smith.
However, Petras’ journey to her album “Feed the Beast” has been marked by challenges. Her association with producer Dr. Luke, who was embroiled in a legal battle with Kesha over accusations of sexual assault and abuse, drew criticism from many music fans. Additionally, her original debut album, “Problematique,” was scrapped and leaked after signing with a major label in 2021.
Petras describes “Feed the Beast” as her most personal work yet, departing from the characters she embodied in previous projects. The lyrics predominantly explore explicit and provocative themes, with “Sex Talk” and “Hit It From the Back” being particularly direct and humorous.
In her pursuit of mainstream success, Petras seems to have compromised the forward-thinking and unique qualities that initially captivated her fanbase. Despite its dance-floor potential, “Feed the Beast” lacks the innovative personality that defined her earlier work. As fans, we hope Petras can reclaim her creative edge in future endeavors.
