UPS and FedEx Ground MD-11 Cargo Planes After Louisville Crash – The New York Times
UPS grounded a group of McDonnell Douglas MD-11 planes after a deadly crash.
The company said the jets likely will not return to service during the peak holiday season.
UPS Airlines president Bill Moore told employees the work could take several months.
The airline first expected the process to take weeks. The estimate now spans months.
A fiery MD-11 crash on Nov. 4 in Louisville, Kentucky, killed 14 people. At least 23 people suffered injuries after the left engine detached during takeoff.
Cargo carriers grounded MD-11 fleets soon after the crash, ahead of an FAA directive.
Moore wrote that Boeing’s review shows inspections and repairs will be more extensive than first thought.
A UPS spokesperson said the company will use contingency plans to keep deliveries on schedule.
The spokesperson added the company will take the time needed to confirm every aircraft meets safety standards.
