Warner Bros. Breaks Box Office Record: 7 Straight $40M+ Openings After The Conjuring: Last Rites

Warner Bros. just made box office history—and horror fans helped seal the deal.

The Conjuring: Last Rites (a.k.a. The Conjuring 4) scared up a massive $83 million domestically and $187 million worldwide on opening weekend. That’s not only the franchise’s best debut yet but also the seventh consecutive Warner Bros. release to cross $40 million at the U.S. box office. No other studio has ever pulled off that kind of streak.

This winning run comes after a rocky 2024, when movies like Joker: Folie à Deux, Mickey 17, and The Alto Knights stumbled at the box office. But the tide turned in April with A Minecraft Movie, which opened to a jaw-dropping $162 million and has since earned nearly $1 billion globally. From there, Warner Bros. kept stacking wins:

  • Sinners – $48M opening
  • Final Destination: Bloodlines – $51.6M opening
  • F1: The Movie (starring Brad Pitt) – $57M opening
  • Superman – $125M opening
  • Weapons – $43.5M opening

And now, The Conjuring: Last Rites has extended the hot streak.

What’s equally impressive is that these films are holding strong after opening weekend—something Disney’s Fantastic Four: First Steps and Thunderbolts couldn’t manage. Right now, A Minecraft Movie leads the year for Warner Bros. with $957M worldwide, followed by F1 ($617M), Superman ($613M), and Sinners ($366M).

Industry experts say Warner Bros. turned things around by making bold creative choices that audiences actually wanted to see. While some earlier bets lost big—Mickey 17 and The Alto Knights reportedly dropped $110M—the recent lineup has delivered serious profits. For example:

  • Superman is expected to bring in $125M in profits.
  • Final Destination: Bloodlines could net around $75M.
  • Weapons is on track for $65M (and still climbing).

The success has also eased pressure on Warner Bros. leadership. Just months ago, co-chiefs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy faced tough questions after a string of flops. Now, thanks to these box office wins, they’ve silenced the critics—at least for now.

Of course, Hollywood is unpredictable. The studio’s next big test is Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, starring Leonardo DiCaprio. With a $130M budget, it’ll need at least $300M to break even. That’s a tall order, but if Warner Bros. keeps this momentum going, it just might pull it off.

Looking ahead to 2026, the slate is packed with big swings: a Wuthering Heights remake starring Margot Robbie, Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Frankenstein spinoff The Bride, DC’s Supergirl and Clayface, and Dune Part Three. If 2025 proved anything, it’s that Warner Bros. isn’t afraid to take risks—and right now, those risks are paying off.
