Weapons’ To Beat ‘Freakier Friday’ At Box Office With $30 Million+
American audiences have spoken: give us original, high-quality horror, and we’ll show up in droves.
This weekend, Zach Cregger’s horror-thriller Weapons dominated the U.S. box office, pulling in $42.5 million. It’s the second original horror film this year to hit No. 1—following April’s Sinners by Ryan Coogler, which debuted at $45.6 million. Both are Warner Bros. releases, proving the studio’s knack for big horror hits.
Weapons has already outperformed Cregger’s 2022 success Barbarian ($40.8 million). Critics love it too—95% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, just shy of Sinners’ impressive 97%. According to box office analyst Paul Dergarabedian, buzz plus strong reviews can make horror movies “extraordinarily successful.”
In second place was Disney’s fantasy-comedy Freakier Friday, earning $29 million in its debut. The sequel to the 2003 hit Freaky Friday offered a family-friendly counterbalance to Weapons, giving moviegoers a wide range of choices.
Overall, the box office is looking healthy—up 7.6% from last year, totaling $5.6 billion so far in 2025.
Other top spots:
- 3rd: The Fantastic Four: First Steps – $15.5 million (total $230.4 million)
- 4th: Bad Guys 2 – $10.4 million
- 5th: The Naked Gun – $8.37 million
With summer winding down, Disney is gearing up for major year-end releases—Zootopia 2 (Nov. 26) and Avatar: Fire and Ash (Dec. 19).
