White House slams outrage over Sydney Sweeney’s American Eagle ads, calls it ‘big reason’ Americans
The White House has fired back at critics who’ve taken issue with Sydney Sweeney’s latest American Eagle jeans ad — calling the outrage ridiculous and a reason many Americans voted for Donald Trump.
The ad in question features the actress with the tagline: “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans” — a cheeky play on the word “genes.” While many viewers found it clever and lighthearted, some liberal critics accused the campaign of subtly promoting white beauty standards and glorifying Sweeney’s slim figure.
White House communications director Steven Cheung didn’t hold back, calling the backlash “moronic.” Posting on X (formerly Twitter), Cheung said, “Cancel culture run amok. This warped, dense liberal thinking is a big reason why Americans voted the way they did in 2024. They’re tired of this BS.”
In the ad, Sweeney gives a tongue-in-cheek explanation: “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color. My jeans are blue.” The line plays humorously on genetics and denim.
Conservative commentator Megyn Kelly also came to Sweeney’s defense, calling the outrage “absurd.”
“She’s being called a white supremacist for doing a jeans commercial,” Kelly said on her show. “It’s clearly about her body — something she’s known for — not her skin color. But the far Left is twisting it into something it’s not.”
Kelly went on to say the criticism is rooted in who gets to represent America’s “best genes,” suggesting some people are uncomfortable seeing a white, slim woman in that role. “But the ad celebrates her body, not her race,” she emphasized.
In short, the controversy has turned a playful jeans commercial into a political flashpoint — once again highlighting the culture war battles playing out in America.
