“Why Alcohol Hits Harder As You Age – The Science Explained”

On Wednesday, January 1, 2025, health expert Dr. Elizabeth Landsverk explained why alcohol affects people differently as they age. Many people notice that hangovers worsen and alcohol tolerance decreases over time. This isn’t just a feeling—it’s backed by science.

In your 20s, the body is more resilient. The liver and brain recover faster, and hangovers are often less severe. However, heavy drinking habits formed during this time can cause long-term damage.

By your 30s, moderation becomes more critical. Factors like obesity and fatty liver disease can make alcohol’s effects more harmful. A glass or two a week might be safe, but daily consumption begins to carry risks.

In your 40s, health concerns like hypertension, diabetes, and cholesterol start playing a bigger role. Even moderate drinking can increase the risk of heart disease and stroke.

As you enter your 50s, alcohol’s impact becomes more pronounced. It heightens the risk of cancers, including breast and liver cancer. Sleep also becomes harder to maintain, and alcohol only worsens this issue.

By your 60s, the body loses the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase, which helps break down alcohol. This means a single glass of wine can cause sluggishness and illness the next day. The liver, brain, and kidneys have less ability to process alcohol, amplifying its toxic effects.

Dr. Landsverk compared alcoholic drinks to candy bars—they might feel good occasionally, but regular consumption increases health risks. While quitting alcohol entirely isn’t necessary for everyone, limiting intake can significantly improve health and well-being as you age.
