Israel-Palestine War: Elon Musk’s X Removes Pro-Hamas Accounts
In response to the recent Hamas attacks on Israel, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, now referred to as “X,” swiftly removed numerous Hamas-affiliated accounts, declaring its stance against terrorist organizations. Linda Yaccarino, the CEO of X, emphasized the platform’s commitment to maintaining public discourse, especially during critical events, and its dedication to eradicating illegal content and violent extremist groups in real-time. This action was catalyzed by a 24-hour ultimatum issued by European Union industry chief Thierry Breton to Elon Musk, urging X to combat disinformation and adhere to new EU online content regulations.
The European Union’s Digital Services Act (DSA) necessitates large online platforms like X and Meta’s Facebook to proactively eliminate illegal content and address threats to public security and civic discourse. Yaccarino expressed X’s willingness to cooperate with the EU and hold meetings to address concerns, citing their responsiveness to over 80 takedown requests from the EU and the absence of notices from Europol regarding illegal content on their platform.
Thierry Breton also issued a warning to Meta, giving them 24 hours to provide information on their actions against disinformation after the Israel attack. It’s important to note that the recent Hamas attack has led to a significant death toll in Israel, with 1,300 reported fatalities and thousands injured, further complicating the situation with an estimated 150 people abducted and taken to the Gaza Strip.
