Yankees Pitcher Jimmy Cordero Suspended for the rest of the season.
New York Yankees relief pitcher Jimmy Cordero has been suspended for the remainder of the 2023 season, including the postseason, due to a violation of Major League Baseball’s (MLB) Joint Domestic Violence policy. The suspension came as a surprise to many, including Yankees captain Aaron Judge, who expressed concern for Cordero and his family. Cordero had informed Judge and several other teammates about the impending suspension, leaving the team upset.
The details of MLB’s investigation into Cordero were not disclosed by the league or the Yankees, who were not involved in the probe. Cordero had approached Yankees manager Aaron Boone days before, informing him of the investigation. As part of his suspension, Cordero will participate in a confidential evaluation and treatment program supervised by the Joint Policy Board.
Both MLB and the Yankees released statements expressing support for the disciplinary action and emphasizing their commitment to combating domestic violence. Cordero’s locker was cleaned out in the Yankees clubhouse, and the team’s acceptance of his return in 2024 remains uncertain.
The case brings to mind previous instances of domestic violence involving Yankees players, such as Domingo German and Aroldis Chapman, both of whom received suspensions. The incident involving Cordero is considered a sad situation, and Judge expressed sympathy for Cordero’s family while hoping that he learns from the experience and grows as a person.
Cordero, who joined the Yankees in December 2021, made 31 appearances this season with a 3.86 ERA. His absence will impact the team’s bullpen, although they have been strong in that area throughout the season. The Yankees called up Randy Vasquez from the minor leagues to replace Cordero in the roster.
