China Challenges Boeing and Airbus Grip with Bold C919 Expansion Plan
China is intensifying efforts to challenge Boeing and Airbus in the global aircraft market. On December 2023, Comac’s C919 passenger jet took a significant step as it began flying between Hong Kong and Shanghai. This marks the jet’s first regular international route, operated by China Eastern Airlines.
Comac, the state-owned aerospace manufacturer, plans to expand the C919’s reach to Southeast Asia by 2026. The company also aims to secure European certification as early as this year, opening doors to wider international operations. Yang Yang, Deputy General Manager of Marketing and Sales at Comac, emphasized their focus on resolving technical issues domestically before pushing into global markets.
The C919 is central to President Xi Jinping’s strategy to reduce reliance on Western technology and establish China as a leader in advanced manufacturing. Heavily subsidized by the Chinese government, the jet symbolizes a national ambition to break the Boeing-Airbus duopoly in aviation.
Airbus predicts a global demand for over 42,000 new aircraft in the next two decades, with single-aisle planes accounting for 80% of that total. Comac aims to capitalize on this opportunity. Aviation consultancy IBA forecasts that Comac could increase C919 production from the current rate of one plane per month to 11 by 2040. This expansion could see nearly 2,000 C919 jets delivered globally.
The timing of Comac’s push aligns with challenges faced by Boeing and Airbus, including supply chain disruptions, delivery delays, and financial hurdles. These setbacks have created an opening for new players like Comac to secure market share.
Currently, the C919 operates on domestic routes with China’s three major state-owned carriers: Air China, China Eastern Airlines, and China Southern Airlines. The successful launch of the Hong Kong-Shanghai route signals growing confidence in the jet’s reliability and performance.
As Comac accelerates its international certification efforts, the global aviation industry watches closely. The rise of the C919 represents not just technological advancement but also a geopolitical statement. If successful, it could reshape the competitive landscape of commercial aviation for years to come.
