The financial specifics of Gautam Gambhir’s appointment as India’s head coach remain undecided, but his main focus is on assembling a support staff for the challenges ahead in his three-year tenure. On Tuesday, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah confirmed Gambhir’s long-anticipated appointment. Despite the pending salary details, it is expected to align with that of his predecessors, Rahul Dravid and Ravi Shastri.
“For Gautam, taking charge was paramount; salary and other details can be worked out as they are not going anywhere. This situation is similar to Ravi Shastri’s in 2014 when he became Director of Cricket over head coach Duncan Fletcher,” a BCCI source mentioned.
“Ravi joined without a contract, and things were resolved. Similarly, finer details for Gautam are being finalized, and his salary will be comparable to Rahul Dravid’s,” the source added.
Gambhir is expected to work with his own chosen team, coordinating closely with NCA (National Cricket Academy) coaches overseeing pathways teams (India A and U-19) and targeted players.
Support Staff Decisions
Gambhir’s primary interest lies in forming his core support staff. Abhishek Nayar, head of KKR’s academy and a former Mumbai stalwart, is a likely candidate for an assistant coach role. Nayar, a life coach, has significantly impacted players on a professional level and is close friends with current captain Rohit Sharma.
A BCCI official from Delhi suggested L Balaji and Zaheer Khan as potential bowling coaches. Although R Vinay Kumar is believed to be Gambhir’s preference, the BCCI has reportedly rejected this proposal. However, no official confirmation has been provided by BCCI Secretary Jay Shah.
Regarding the fielding coach role, Jonty Rhodes’ name has emerged, but BCCI has traditionally favored home-grown talent. For example, R Sridhar was a core member of Shastri’s team, having risen through the NCA and India U-19 ranks. Similarly, T Dilip worked extensively under Dravid at NCA and on India A assignments. Munish Bali, familiar with the current setup and young players, might also be considered.
Gambhir’s Challenges and Priorities
The T20I and ODI squad for the Sri Lanka series will be announced soon, but Gambhir’s immediate focus will be on ODIs and Tests. His first significant challenge will be a five-Test series against Australia, marking the first such series between the teams since 1991-92. The opening Test will take place at the Optus Stadium in Perth, known for its bouncy track.
Gambhir, who captained Delhi in the Ranji Trophy from 2013-17, will have his red-ball coaching skills tested. The series will be crucial for India’s World Test Championship qualification.
Additionally, the Champions Trophy in Pakistan looms on the horizon, but the BCCI has yet to approve the schedule. Gambhir, a vocal supporter of the Indian Army, has opposed playing cricket in Pakistan. His stance on this matter will be closely watched if the tournament proceeds as planned.
Gambhir’s new role as head coach brings numerous challenges and responsibilities. While his salary details are pending, his primary focus remains on building a capable support team and preparing for upcoming competitions.
