Heatwave Update: An intense heatwave continues to grip northwest India, with temperatures soaring well beyond the normal range. The meteorological department forecasts stable temperatures for the next 24 hours, followed by a slight decrease. Here, we examine the top 10 hottest cities in India:

India’s heatwave situation is alarming as the intense heatwave persists across northwest India, causing temperatures to exceed the normal by a significant margin. The Indian Meteorological Department reports maximum temperatures surpassing the “normal” by 5.1 degrees Celsius in several regions, including Ladakh and Jharkhand. States and Union Territories such as Bihar, Chandigarh, Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh are currently battling severe heatwave conditions.

Top 10 Hottest Cities in India

  1. Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh – Leading the list, Prayagraj recorded a scorching 47.6 degrees Celsius.
  2. Bathinda, Punjab & Pindara, Haryana – Both cities experienced temperatures of 46.9 degrees Celsius.
  3. Faridabad, Haryana – Not far behind, Faridabad saw a maximum temperature of 46.6 degrees Celsius.
  4. Sirsa & Rohtak, Haryana – These cities sizzled at 46.2 degrees Celsius.
  5. Daltonganj, Jharkhand & Faridkot, Punjab – Both cities are enduring severe heat at 46 degrees Celsius.
  6. Amritsar & Pathankot, Punjab – Each recorded a high of 45.8 degrees Celsius.
  7. Hisar, Haryana – Registered 45.7 degrees Celsius.
  8. Patiala, Punjab – Reached 45.4 degrees Celsius.
  9. Mahendragarh, Haryana – Recorded a high of 45.2 degrees Celsius.
  10. Gurugram, Haryana – Saw maximum temperatures of 45.1 degrees Celsius.

What Classifies a Heatwave? A heatwave is declared when the maximum temperature hits at least 40 degrees Celsius in the plains, 37 degrees in coastal areas, and 30 degrees in hilly regions, with a deviation from normal of at least 4.5 degrees. A severe heatwave is noted if the deviation exceeds 6.4 degrees.

The weather office predicts that the maximum temperatures in northwest India will remain stable for the next 24 hours. After this period, temperatures are expected to decrease by around 2 degrees Celsius.

  • Delhi & Gurdaspur, Punjab – Both at 45 degrees Celsius.
  • Ludhiana, Punjab – At 44.6 degrees Celsius.
  • Chandigarh – The joint capital of Punjab and Haryana recorded a maximum temperature of 44.5 degrees Celsius.
  • Kurukshetra, Haryana – Reached 44.5 degrees Celsius.
  • Ferozepur, Punjab & Jammu city – Both saw highs of 44.3 degrees Celsius.
  • Una, Himachal Pradesh – Recorded 44 degrees Celsius.
  • Dehradun, Uttarakhand – Reached 43.1 degrees Celsius.
  • Katra, Jammu & Kashmir – Recorded a maximum temperature of 40.8 degrees Celsius.
  • Nubra, Ladakh – Nestled in the high Himalayas, Nubra recorded 26.2 degrees Celsius.

The intense heatwave across northwest India underscores the urgent need for measures to combat rising temperatures and protect vulnerable populations from the severe heat. As conditions remain extreme, it is crucial to stay hydrated, avoid direct sun exposure, and take all necessary precautions to stay safe.
