Netanyahu asks for international help as huge fires force evacuation of 3,500 | The Times of Israel
Wildfires Near Jerusalem Spark National Crisis, Prompt Military and Civilian Response
Israel is grappling with its most severe wildfires in over a decade, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declaring a national emergency as flames threaten areas around Jerusalem. Fueled by scorching heat and strong winds, the fires have injured dozens and forced mass evacuations across central Israel.
Fires Near Jerusalem Prompt Urgent Government Action
On April 30, 2025, wildfires broke out near Jerusalem, causing thick smoke to spread across major highways and neighborhoods. The situation escalated rapidly, with Israeli emergency services raising their alert to the highest level.
Prime Minister Netanyahu warned, “The western wind can push the fire easily toward the outskirts of Jerusalem—and even into the city itself. The priority right now is defending Jerusalem.”
He called for:
- Immediate deployment of fire engines and military support
- Creation of firebreaks beyond current fire lines
- Coordination between national and local emergency teams
Dozens Injured, Communities Evacuated
Israel’s emergency medical service, Magen David Adom (MDA), reported that at least 23 people received treatment, including two pregnant women and two infants. Thirteen were hospitalized due to smoke inhalation and burns.
As fires neared residential areas:
- The Jerusalem-Tel Aviv highway was closed
- Thousands of residents in five communities were evacuated
- Military troops were deployed to assist firefighting efforts
Extreme Weather Worsens Fire Conditions
The wildfires were intensified by record-high temperatures and powerful winds, making it difficult for aerial firefighting teams to operate.
Eyal Caspi, Israel’s fire chief, said, “Our aircraft can’t do anything right now due to the weather conditions. Our goal is to save lives.”
A witness near Modiin, Yuval Aharoni, said: “We knew this could happen with the weather forecast, but the response wasn’t fast enough.”
Suspected Arson Under Investigation
National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir suggested that some of the fires might have been started intentionally. Police arrested an individual in East Jerusalem caught “attempting to set fire to a field.”
Though no official link has been established, the investigation remains active.
Key Affected Areas
The fires are concentrated in central Israel, especially:
- Latrun and Bet Shemesh regions
- Jerusalem Hills
- Communities approximately 30km west of Jerusalem
Helicopters, ground crews, and soldiers have been working together to control the fires, but efforts are being challenged by the extreme weather.
Emergency Services on High Alert
MDA has stationed ambulances near fire zones to assist with medical emergencies. Police have asked the public to avoid traveling near affected areas, particularly the Jerusalem-Tel Aviv corridor.
How You Can Stay Safe and Informed
As wildfires continue to threaten lives and infrastructure in Israel, authorities urge residents to:
- Stay tuned to official emergency alerts
- Prepare for possible evacuation
- Avoid unnecessary travel in affected regions
If you’re near the wildfire zones, follow guidance from Israeli police, firefighters, and emergency responders.
