Justin Trudeau Failed”: Canadian PM’s Key Ally Vows To ‘Bring Him Down’
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is facing one of the most significant political challenges of his career. On December 21, 2024, Jagmeet Singh, leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP) and a key ally of Trudeau, announced his decision to withdraw support from the Liberal government. Singh made it clear that he intends to table a no-confidence motion in the House of Commons after the winter break on January 27, 2025.
In a post on X, Singh stated, “Justin Trudeau failed in the biggest job a Prime Minister has: to work for people, not the powerful. The NDP will vote to bring this government down, and give Canadians a chance to vote for a government who will work for them.”
This announcement came on the same day Trudeau reshuffled his cabinet and held the first meeting of his new team. However, the changes did little to ease the mounting pressure on his leadership. The Bloc Quebecois, another opposition party, has also confirmed their support for the no-confidence motion, leaving Trudeau with minimal chances of survival.
The Conservative Party, led by Pierre Poilievre, has been pushing for early elections for months. Poilievre had previously challenged Singh to initiate the no-confidence motion, and now it seems his challenge has been accepted.
Adding to Trudeau’s troubles, internal dissent within the Liberal Party is growing. At least 19 MPs have publicly urged Trudeau to step down, with prominent voices like four-term MP Rob Oliphant joining the chorus. Others, including MP Jenica Atwin, have declared they will not run in the next election under Trudeau’s leadership.
Despite the political storm, Trudeau remains defiant. He has made it clear that he has no intention of resigning and plans to lead his party into the next election. However, with the NDP and Bloc Quebecois aligning with the Conservatives, Trudeau’s grip on power looks increasingly fragile.
The upcoming no-confidence vote in January will determine whether Trudeau’s government can survive or if Canadians will head to the polls earlier than expected.
