Novak Djokovic’s Historic Win
Novak Djokovic has achieved his long-standing goal of becoming the record holder for the most Grand Slam titles in men’s tennis. With his victory in the French Open men’s singles final against Casper Ruud, Djokovic secured his 23rd Grand Slam title, surpassing Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. The match lasted 3 hours and 13 minutes, with Djokovic winning in straight sets, 7-6 (1), 6-3, 7-5.
Djokovic’s win at the French Open adds to his previous titles in 2016 and 2021, making him the only male player to have won at least three titles in each of the four major events. He now has a chance to complete a calendar-year Grand Slam by winning all four majors in 2023, a feat that has not been accomplished since Rod Laver in 1969. Djokovic will continue his pursuit of this record at Wimbledon, which begins on July 3.
At 36 years old, Djokovic became the oldest singles champion at Roland Garros, known for its physically demanding clay courts. In addition to his record-breaking achievement, Djokovic will also return to the number one spot in the ATP rankings on Monday, surpassing Carlos Alcaraz.
With his 23rd Grand Slam title, Djokovic has equalled Serena Williams’ record for the most Grand Slam titles in the Open era. Margaret Court holds the overall record with 24 titles, some of which were won during the amateur era.
Djokovic’s victory solidifies his claim as one of the greatest tennis players of all time, and the debate over the “Greatest of All-Time” in tennis continues among Djokovic, Nadal, and Federer, with Djokovic’s Grand Slam record providing a strong argument in his favor.
