International Yoga Day 2024 LIVE Updates: PM Modi To Perform Yoga Near Dal Lake In Srinagar
Srinagar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will spearhead the 10th International Yoga Day celebrations from the picturesque banks of Dal Lake in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. This significant event is anticipated to garner substantial national and international attention, highlighting the strategic importance of the location.
Yoga Event on Dal Lake Banks
The event will take place at the Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Complex (SKICC) on the banks of Srinagar’s Dal Lake. This year’s theme, “Yoga for Self and Society,” underscores the crucial role of yoga in promoting individual well-being and social harmony.
Prime Minister Modi will perform yoga asanas alongside VIPs, children, and thousands of local residents. An estimated 4,000 people are expected to participate in the event. The Prime Minister is scheduled to address the gathering at 6:40 pm, followed by a 30-minute yoga session starting at 7 am. Dignitaries attending include Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha and Ayush Minister Prataprao Ganpatrao Jadhav.
Over the years, PM Modi has led Yoga Day celebrations at various iconic locations such as Delhi’s Kartavya Path, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Ranchi, and Jabalpur. Last year, he led the event at the UN Headquarters in New York, adding further prestige to this year’s event in Srinagar.
Jammu and Kashmir has recently been in the news for its record voter turnout in the general election and the subsequent terror incidents. This month alone, there have been four attacks in the Jammu region, including a tragic assault on a bus carrying pilgrims in Reasi district, which resulted in ten fatalities.
Enhanced Security Measures
To ensure the safety of participants, extensive security measures have been implemented in and around Srinagar. The district is on high alert, with the Special Protection Group (SPG) conducting rigorous drills on all routes leading to the SKICC. The venue, taken over by the SPG two days prior to the Prime Minister’s visit, has been thoroughly secured.
Additionally, Marco commandos of the navy are stationed around the SKICC, and deep combing operations have been regularly conducted at Dal Lake. The area has been designated a “No-drone zone” to prevent any aerial threats.
In a special initiative, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is organizing a unique event, ‘Yoga for Space,’ to commemorate International Yoga Day 2024. Scientists and officials from ISRO will perform yoga together, adhering to the Common Yoga Protocol guidelines. The Gaganyaan project team will also join the global campaign by practicing yoga on this occasion.
This visit marks PM Modi’s first trip to Jammu and Kashmir after being elected for a historic third term. During an event for young people at the SKICC on Thursday evening, he assured that assembly polls and statehood for Jammu and Kashmir are “not far off.”
Prime Minister Modi’s leadership in the International Yoga Day celebrations not only emphasizes the importance of yoga but also showcases the cultural and strategic significance of Jammu and Kashmir on the global stage.
