Putin Seeks Oil, Gas Deals in Upcoming Talks With Xi
Russian President Vladimir Putin has arrived in Beijing for an important summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, just days after US President Donald Trump visited China. The visit highlights how important China has become for Russia as Moscow faces growing isolation from the West over the Ukraine war.
This is Putin’s first foreign trip of the year and his 25th official visit to China. The two leaders are expected to discuss trade, energy, and strategic cooperation during the two-day meeting.
One of the biggest topics on the agenda is the proposed Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline. If approved, the project could send up to 50 billion cubic metres of Russian natural gas to China every year. The deal would strengthen China’s energy security while giving Russia a major economic boost at a time when Western sanctions continue to hurt its economy.
China has become Russia’s largest trading partner and the biggest buyer of Russian oil. Since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, Moscow has relied more heavily on Beijing for trade and economic support. Reports also suggest Russia depends on Chinese-made components and technology for parts of its military operations.
At the same time, China is trying to carefully balance its relationship with both Russia and Western nations. Beijing has refused to openly condemn Russia’s actions in Ukraine, but it also wants to maintain stable ties with Europe and the United States. Analysts say this puts Xi in a difficult diplomatic position.
Experts believe the relationship between the two countries is becoming increasingly unequal, with China holding more economic power. Russia now depends heavily on Chinese markets and trade, giving Beijing stronger influence in future negotiations.
Putin’s visit also comes as world leaders continue to travel to Beijing to strengthen economic ties with China. Recent visitors have included leaders from Britain, Canada, Germany, South Korea, Finland, and Vietnam, showing China’s growing global influence.
During the visit, Putin and Xi are expected to sign agreements aimed at “further strengthening strategic cooperation.” Putin’s schedule also includes meetings with Chinese Premier Li Qiang, cultural events, and private talks with Xi.
The meeting is being closely watched around the world because it could shape future global trade, energy markets, and geopolitical alliances.
