Low Vitamin C Levels Linked to Poorer Brain Health in Older Adults
Vitamin C is widely known for supporting the immune system, but new research suggests it may also play an important role in keeping the brain healthy as we grow older.
A recent study published in PLOS One examined blood samples and MRI brain scans from 2,044 older adults. Researchers discovered that people with higher levels of vitamin C in their blood tended to have healthier brain structures compared to those with lower levels.
The study found two important benefits. First, higher vitamin C levels were linked to greater gray matter volume. Gray matter is the part of the brain responsible for memory, thinking, decision-making, attention, and language. Maintaining healthy gray matter is considered a sign of better brain aging.
Second, researchers observed stronger connectivity in the brain’s “default mode network,” a system involved in memory, learning, and emotional regulation. Stronger connections in this network are often associated with better cognitive function.
Experts caution that the study only found an association and does not prove that vitamin C directly improves brain health. However, the findings support earlier research showing that vitamin C acts as a powerful antioxidant, helping protect brain cells from damage caused by everyday metabolic processes.
Vitamin C also helps produce neurotransmitters—the chemical messengers that allow brain cells to communicate—and supports healthy cell membranes. Interestingly, the brain stores vitamin C at much higher levels than the bloodstream, highlighting its importance for brain function.
Nutrition experts recommend getting vitamin C primarily through food rather than relying on supplements. Excellent sources include oranges, guava, strawberries, bell peppers, broccoli, and leafy green vegetables.
Researchers and health professionals agree that a balanced, plant-rich diet combined with regular exercise, quality sleep, stress management, and healthy blood pressure levels can help support long-term brain health.
Key Takeaway
Although researchers need to investigate further, a nutritious diet that keeps vitamin C levels healthy could simply and effectively support brain health and healthy aging.
